And so…i came back alone on 9th Aug night.
It was tough and a teary one.
Tears flowing non-stop. PL never cry or get very angry unless she is really upset or when someone really pisses or provoked her. Never cry until like that before. Woke up crying. Even cried when i shower or eat. Super emo..no energy to do anything.
Trying to hide my teary eyes and smudged mascaras and touching up on my make up.
So today , i met Elaine for dinner and coffee. Ive been eating like crazy and i really really swear that i will jog tomorrow morning ! I need to lose weight.
My eyes were so swollen. Woke up tearing badly this morning.
I cant even see my jaws or chin now. My face is really damn round and puffy.
And so i went out with puffy eyes and face.
Here is my outfit of the day in upcoming Agneselle’s stripe tube top. Love this piece to the max.
Well , we are thousand of miles apart but all thanks to the wonderful invention of smart phones and free viber/kakaotalk calls , we are able to call and talk to each other anytime.
So how was my experience living with a Mr Park’s family for 5 weeks ?
All familes are the same and all parents want the best for their children.
It was really lovely and wonderful. I felt so welcome and his parents and sister are very kind and nice to me. Listening to Korean everyday and watching TV programs with no English subtitles , im beginning to understand better and know the content. Except for some words which i dont know , i will ask for the meaning and explanation .
So how was the culture ?
It is a polite country. You felt good being greeted when you stepped into and out of the cafe, shop, restaurants and the staff are all very very very polite and courteous. You dont really get such services in SG even in some high end restaurants. Not really like what you see in Korean dramas.
Beers and Sojus are part of every meal. Bottles after bottles. Beers and Soju are cheap over there. There dont seem to be any meal i had with Mr Park that doesnt accompany with a bottle of beer except for the 2 weeks after he had his surgery. So i can say that most Koreans are good drinkers ( maybe except for some ) . Didnt see him get drunk from bottles of beers and sojus.
Beer with Korean BBQ , pancakes and chicken are the best combination. All Korean food seems to go well with beer and sojus. Alcohol keep them warm during cool and cold seasons.
Selcas and lotsa selcas are part of the culture. I was at Lotte world and waiting 1 hour for my ride. And everyone in the line will be taking out their phones and do selcas. What is SELCA ? It stands for Self Camera. The girls infront of me probably took at least 50 pictures of themselves during that 1 hour. I kept hearing cameras snapping away. They will look through and delete those unwanted ones. Out of 50 shots , 1 shot will defintely capture the best angle.
If you think there is only Kimchi…you are wrong. There are so much more like pancakes , cold noodles ( different kind of cold noodles – best summer food to keep cool ) , soup , rice , seafood etc. One thing they lack of is chilli sauce. They dont have chilli sauce. So if you go to a western restaurant or KFC/Macs , they may not have chilli sauce. Only Ketchup. Soo…i brought my own ! lol.
There is delivery for any food. Even if you ordered only ONE bowl of noodle. That is how convenient it is. I was hungry at night and too lazy to head down to buy. We called for delivery and it was delivered within half an hour. You can buy anything from a supermarket or market place and they will deliver to you. All at your convenience.
Fashion and beauty ?
Most of the girls there are dressed up in basics and oversized tops ( you can see from my pictures, some of the locals were in the background ) . Nothing like those you think of ( KPOP stars – 2NE1 style ). Maybe some of them do dressed up alot but most of them are in basics. Stripes are their favourite too. High waisted pants/shorts/skirts , colourful sneakers/sports wear , caps , platform shoes and a tote. High waisted bottoms makes your legs look longer and platform shoes make you look taller. Man wear shoes with platform insoles to make themselves look taller. Whatever that makes you look good on the outside. Because of seasonal changes , clothes goes on sale very fast. So shopping near end of each season is cheaper because everything is on SALE. Cardigans are one of their favorites. Esp those light weight and airy ones for summer. To protect their skin away from the sun.
Beauty ? Korean make up brands are very cheap over there ( Of cos ! Since they were made in Korea ) . So you can buy different colour palettes for different looks and seasons. Orange coloured lipsticks are popular and often used by the girls over there. They focus alot on good bases such as BB/CC cream or foundations to make their skin look flawless. I like their skincare products. I like them alot and it works very well on my skin compared to international brands. Korean girls focus alot on hydration and whitening. And most of them have a mirror in their bag. I saw one student whipping out a big ass mirror which is almost the size of her face and she was putting make up in the train. No one bat an eyelid or look at her. You will probably get “stomped” or “facebooked” or stared at if you do that in Singapore’s mrt train. 9 in 10 women put on make up. BB/CC cream , concealer , eyeliner and lipstick/lip tint. Same kind of make up and colours make everyone look alike. Most of the public/shopping mall toilets have a “make up corner”. Esp the one at Shinsaegae and Lotte dept stores which have rows of velvety chairs and mirrors for you to touch up your make up. With just SGD 50 you can get good make up products for your entire face. Everyone over there took the effort to look good . Whether you are ugly , pretty , short , tall , slim or fat. If you took the effort to dress up and make u , you will look good. Even men put on BB cream to look good.
Sports wear brands are everywhere. It is part of their fashion. So guys , if you think Korea is just a shopping heaven for women , you are wrong ! If you are a sporty person and love sports wear , this is a place for you to shop. Their sports wear are very chic and hip and not the niche designs you see in SG. You can wear them out or when you do sports.
They have a good and alot of range of sport shoes over there. For the new balance fanatics , they have 100 over colours and designs over there in their boutiques. You can find their boutiques anywhere. I went to the one at Myeong dong but there wasnt much designs and choices. Went one off the central area and they have alot. If you want to see all brands ( adidas , nikes which they do have very nice sneakers as well , reeboks , vans or new balance etc ) , you can go to ABC mart or Shoe Mart. They only have the latest designs and older season designs are mostly on sale. If you want more variety for a certain brand , go to their individual boutiques. Frankly speaking , most people buy New Balances because it is the fad right now and for the “N” word. But i still prefer Nike shoes. Just that Nike colour sneakers are kinda limited in range but New Balance has more. Boutiques in Gangnam , Apujeong or Cheongdamdong are usually bigger than the rest. If you are a cap fanatic , you can shop at MLB ( can be found at any shopping area but the one at Apujeong is bigger ) or Hat’s On.
Plastic Surgery – i saw more girls having that in Seoul than any other city i went to. But they really looked so pretty and natural. But some super failed. Looks like they had too much done or their doctors are no good.
Most of them still cant really speak or understand English . If they do , you have to speak really slowly so they can understand. For Touristy area like myeong dong , most of the staff can speak mandarin because some of them are Chinese to cater to the China tourists. Or you can ask for Chinese speaking staff to explain the products / menu to you.
Favourite question among friends and readers who emailed me :
What’s the difference between being in a relationship with a Korean and Singaporean ?
Frankly speaking , we were a bit concerned about the habits , culture and language at the start of relationship. But nationality , culture and language are now not a concern for us because we do have mutual understanding and love. Sometimes i forgot that he is a Korean and sometimes he forgot that im a Singaporean and started speaking a string of Korean slangs to me and i got abit blur and stunned. lol. With mutual understanding and love , language/culture/nationality barrier is NOT a problem.
And from there , we know that …..
ALL MEN AND WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD ARE THE SAME. ALL MEN AND WOMEN WANT TO BE LOVED.
Is it like what you watched on Korean drama being so sweet and drama dreamy like ? Well , there are romantic men in Korea as well as non-romantic men in Korea. Same goes to Singaporean men. There are romantic ones and non-romantic ones in SG. It depends on the man’s personality and character after all. ALL MEN are the same despite their nationality. There will be always be jerks and angels in every country !
So..peace out !
** But i wanna say that i felt more loved and treasured in this rs. He makes me feel that i am important and the best which i have never felt before. I never have to worry about him going out late or going to those “lap sap places” – Hokkien for dirty places. And i hope this long distance rs will work out ! **
